The Weather's Looking Good! We have had three weekends in a row of awesome conditions, breeze between 10-20 knots and warm temperatures in the 40s. See our fleet web site for details. This weekend for the Midwinters it looks to be even better. The forecast is for temperatures around 50. A cool front is scheduled on Friday evening/Saturday morning which will bring the classic NWer, similar to last year's midwinters and the '99 Nationals, only a bit warmer! So if you are on the fence, GET OFF, pack your boat and get down here for the regatta. Registration is 7-9, skippers meeting is at 9:30, harbor start at 10:30 and the first start is 11:00am. See the Notice Of Race for additional schedule details. Things are beginning to get interesting for this year's IC Midwinters. Larchmont InterClub ace, Ben Cesare, has reportedly just signed on local Annapolis resident and world champion sailor Terry Hutchinson to skipper his other division. There's no report on whether Terry will sail A or B. Ben is one of the very best frostbite sailors around, and if Terry can quickly rekindle the dinghy skills that made him a two-time collegiate sailor of the year, this team is sure to be in contension for the title. An invitation to sail has been extended to another two-time college sailor of the year, Gary Jobson. No response from "Jobo" yet, but he may be still having nightmares of his last IC experience 12 years ago when his sail met an untimely demise at the hand of an SSA pier (see "A bit of Midwinters history" below). While many other great IC sailors from outside Annapolis are content to sail at home on February 10-11, some may be giving the famed IC Midwinters in Annapolis another look. Come on down, we aim to please. There are only a few Loaner Boats left for the regatta. A bit of Midwinters history. Doug Clark, former coach at the Naval Academy, was one of the founding members of the Annapolis InterClub Fleet. He'll be coming down to the regatta this year with sailors from the Merchant Marine Academy. I asked him about the "old" days, and this is what he had to say: "I believe the first IC Midwinters was 1989, Pete McChesney and I were the instigators. I sold a Soling we had at Navy and purchased 3 new IC's from Menkart. At SSA we found some 100 series boats in Rochester for $500 a piece - instant fleet. Alex's (Stout) boat the "pig" I think is the only surviving member. We had 12 teams that 1st year. The funniest thing was when Gary Jobson was sailing and came into the basin to rotate and got his sail wrapped up in a piling and tore it to shreads. Good laughs for all the spectators. Thanks for all the hard work." Turnout is Gwowing 1/31 Update: the count is closing in on 30 boats!

Factoid Is it too cold and windy to frostbite in February? Since 1996, frostbite regattas in Annapolis (4 Midwinters and 1 Nationals) have never missed a single day's racing. On average, the Annapolis IC Fleet misses less than 2 days racing per year due to bad weather. These statistics make Annapolis the most reliable location for frostbiting on the East Coast. The Annapolis Midwinter's regattas generally run over 20 races in a weekend, or 10 races per division.

Historically, the IC was conceived to be a boat that sailors from different clubs could jump into at a regatta without having to bring there own boat - thus the name "Inter-Club". In keeping with that notion, the Annapolis InterClub Fleet is pleased to announce our "Inter-Club Boat Loaning Program" for the 2001 IC Midwinters. We want to make the decision to come to our regatta an easy one. We will have a number of very competitive ICs for members from other IC fleets to use. Here is the deal:
